These are some of the things you can do to begin attacking anxiety on your own. As I have pointed out before I am not a specialist or therapist and have never insinuated to be one.
Relationships can be good or bad. Attempt to disassociate yourself if possible from stressful situations. At times, we have all known people who love turmoil; the more of it, the better. Abusive relationships cause stress and can trigger anxiety attacks. Learning to cut your exposure to these situations is very important and will lead to overcoming panic attacks.
Discover your triggers and if it is possible, try to limit your exposure to them. This does not mean to avoid all social activities if you do not like crowded places, but pick and choose your battles as of when and where attacking anxiety will be best.
Setup a support system for yourself, a friend or family member who understands you and can be reached at any time of day or night. This way you will see that you are not alone. This also can give you a "Buddy" who can be with you when you are going to try overcoming panic attacks.
If you feel a panic attack sneaking up on you, it is always possible to attempt calming yourself down with slow deep even breathing. Relaxing your body through heavy breathing takes practice, but when you master this technique, you will find it very useful in many situations and places.
A full night sleep is necessary for you, to not only feel rested, but to make sure your stress levels are low. It is very hard to not be anxious when you have had a restless night, twisting and turning, worrying about stuff that might never happen. Sometimes, overcoming panic attacks start with your state of mind. Before going to sleep, always clear your mind from the negative thoughts replacing them with nice, beautiful thoughts; remembering something beautiful that happened to you. By reliving these past moments, you automatically replace them, it is that easy.
Exercise is a great way to lower anxiety; aerobics, jogging or even walking with a loved one in the fresh air. Whatever you choose, you should enjoy doing it. Yoga is a fantastic exercise with slow easy moves to stretch and relax tense muscles. After a yoga session, you cannot help but be relaxed.
Aromatherapy is easy to fit into any life style; some essential oils that are commonly used are lavender, chamomile, lemon, and ylang-ylang. You can use a diffuser and mist the room you are in or a terra-cotta ring placed over a light bulb with a few drops of your favorite oil. You can also place a few drops on your pillow if you wish.
Cut out Alcohol and Nicotine. Most people feel they go hand in hand, to kick back with, to relax and calm down; this is the farthest from the truth. Nicotine is a stimulant and alcohol only masks the stress. When the effects wear off, it just comes back with a vengeance, creating a vicious circle.
Caffeine also has to go. It is a stimulant that is found in many places; some we know of and others that can be quite surprising. Coffee, chocolate, some teas, soda drink and of course energy drinks contain caffeine. Overcoming panic attack is hard, especially when you don't know where some of the things like caffeine, that are winding you up, are hiding.
The last but not the least is try to adopt a little cat or dog. There are so many out there in misery that it is not even funny, Not only you will have a little friend for life but at the same time you will throw a lifeline to a little guy that most likely needs it. No need to spend money on a pure breed. All you have to do is to go to your local SPCA and you will see what I mean. It brings tears to my eyes thinking about it. And you know what, the love they will give you back when you think you are all alone is worth its weight in gold.
These are just some of the things you can do to start attacking anxiety on your own. As I have mentioned before I am not a doctor or therapist and have never claimed to be one. My only interest in this subject is from watching a loved one going thru agony. Keep in mind, you must rule out any underlying medical conditions that you might not be aware of, before taking this on alone.
